(i) We, the people of India : The ultimate power in a democracy are the people as the Constitution has been drawn up and enacted by them through their representatives. It was not handed to them by a king or any outside powers.

(ii) Republic : The head of state, i.e., President is elected through an electoral college and his post is not hereditary.

(iii) Justice : Citizens cannot be discriminated on the grounds of caste, religion or sex.

(iv) Liberty : Citizens have freedom of speech, expression and action. No unreasonable restrictions are placed on them in this respect.

(v) Equality : All are equal before the law and have equal opportunity to progress. The government should ensure equal opportunity for all.

(vi) Fraternity : Citizens should behave as if they are members of the same family and no one should be treated as inferior.
