(i) Each member of the Central Legislature represents one area. Thus the whole country is divided into 543 areas. Each of these areas is called a Parliamentary Constituency’. (ii) Each constituency has roughly the same population in order to ensure that each vote has the same value. |
(i) In the same way the states are divided into areas that elect one member each. These are called Assembly Constituencies. (ii) Depending on the population of the state, the Assemblies vary in size. The largest Vidhan Sabha is for U.P. which has 403 members while a small state like Goa has only 40 members. |
