(i) The Jacobin Club was the most successful political club in revolutionary France.
(ii) It was an important rallying point for people who wished to discuss government policies and plan their own form of action.
(iii) In the summer of 1792, the Jacobins planned an insurrection of a large number of Parisians who were angered by the short supplies and high prices of food.
(iv) On the morning of 10th August, an angry crowd stormed the Palace of the Tuileries.
(v) They massacred the king’s guards and held the king himself as hostage for several hours.
(vi) Later, the National Assembly voted to imprison the royal family. Then elections were held.
(vii) From now on, all men of 21 years and above, regardless of wealth, got the right to vote.
(viii) The newly elected assembly was called the Convention. It abolished the monarchy on 21st September, 1792 and declared France a Republic.
